Artist Peter Anton opens first solo-exhibition in The Netherlands:

LIFE IS LIKE A GREAT BIG BOX OF CHOCOLATES

Peter Anton

Artist Peter Anton will open his first solo-exhibition in The Netherlands, on the 27th of September at Gallery Delaive. The American Peter Anton (1963) enjoys international fame because of his bigger-than-life sculptures of real-life boxed chocolates and other candy. The opening will be part of OPEN!, the start of the new art season in het Spiegelkwartier, Amsterdam’s art and antiques area, in which over 70 galleries and antique shops take part.

Peter Anton’s hyper-realistic sculptures of boxed chocolates, popsicles, lollipops and cakes remind of the pop art of Claes Oldenburgh, Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol. It is no coincidence Anton’s nickname is “Candy Warhol”. Anton gets his inspiration from his fascination for food: "In my sculptures I like to alter and overstate foods to give them new meanings. I have an innate reverence for the things we eat. Food brings people together and there is no better way to celebrate life.” The colorful, shiny compositions of tempting pralines and cherry filled chocolates look like a seductive still life. Naughty bites have been taken of some of the sweets, while in some of the paper wrappers remain only dark chocolate crumbs. “Through the use of humor, scale, irony, and intensity in my forms, the foods we take for granted become aesthetically pleasing and seductive in atypical ways.”, Anton says. “I like to create art that can lure, charm, tease, disarm and surprise.”

In his aim to produce as realistic as possible pieces, Anton experiments with many different materials, including: plaster, plastic, wood, resin, aluminum, clay, acrylic and oil paint. A very precise and detailed work process results in lifelike chocolates, which provoke an impossible to fulfill desire in the viewer. Anton: “My sculptures put viewers in a vulnerable state so that I can communicate with their inner selves in a more honest and direct way. I activate the hunger people have for the things that give them pleasure and force them to surrender. The sensual nature of the works stimulates basic human needs and desires that generate cravings and passion."

Anton’s work has been exhibited around the world, but is new in The Netherlands. At the international famous art fair TEFAF in the Dutch city of Maastricht earlier this year, the work of Peter Anton was an absolute favorite with the audience. Thousands of pictures where made and in just over a day visitors took nearly 3.000 cards with the image of Anton’s boxed chocolates sculpture. His work is part of major collections, including those of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones and the Royal Family of Jordan, and is part of the permanent collection of The Portland Museum of Art among others. Fashion brand Louis Vuitton recently paid a tribute to Peter Anton’s work in the windows of their stores worldwide.
